Sailing to Safety

Sometimes you just know. You feel the wind at your back; the Lord is at your side and skipper of the ship.

After spending the last six weeks applying for simple jobs at the airport for which I am overqualified and over-experienced, I felt discouraged because there were no callbacks. No one wanted to meet with me.

I went back to the job website and a post announced that job interviews for the position were being held that day. I had applied for the job working the ramp, but hadn’t heard a thing. This was an opportunity I wasn’t going to miss!

I joined maybe 10 or 12 others in a conference room meeting with the HR person who explained that this was a part-time position and hard work. She asked if anyone had worked at the airport before. A couple of people nodded their heads and then she looked over at me. I said, yeah, I worked TSA. She knew what that was all about. I told her I thought the TSA was probably easier today than it was when I tried it in 2018. She agreed.

She promised that she would send emails offering positions by 6 PM that night but nothing came. There was no offer letter the next morning after I got up and took the ladies to school and to work. Confused and frustrated I said a prayer that the Lord open the eyes of those who were looking at my résumé.

No sooner had I uttered those words when I checked my email and there it was: I got an email offering me an exciting position at the nearby airport.

Since then I have been chortling with delight as this position working in and around jetliners on the tarmac seems like fun. I love the airport scene. I’m like a dog that convulses at the sight of  a squirrel whenever I see jets approaching or departing SeaTac airport.

Since my heydays in Africa, I have followed up with short-term gig work. It keeps me busy and adds some dollars to the coffers. For weeks, though, I had been applying for an airport position just minutes from home rather than an endure the hour-long commute each way to and from my job in the city.

I thank the Lord for steering me toward a nearby opportunity.

Amen.
